The city of Atascadero is making a guide to the best local holiday lights displays for the second year in a row.

People can reference the Trail of Lights map to find local homes and businesses with festive decorations, helping them “know exactly where to take an evening drive or neighborhood stroll” from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6 through Dec. 25, according to a news release.

Residents can register their addresses for the Trail of Lights map by visiting the city’s website.

To participate in the trail contest, residents must upload a photo of their display. Registration for the contest will close Dec. 6 at midnight.

Residents who don’t want to participate in the contest do not have to submit pictures, and they may register after the deadline of Dec. 6.

Contest categories include Best Use of Theme (theme of the participant’s choice), Most Creative Light Display and Best Overall Light Display.

People can vote on their favorite display from Dec. 7 to Dec. 9 at midnight, and winners will be announced at the city’s downtown Winter Wonderland event on Dec. 10.

First- and second-place winners will be awarded gift cards to local businesses.

For more information or to register for the contest, visit the city’s website or email at trailoflights@atascadero.org.
