Veterans Day in SLO County: Here’s a roundup of events happening this year
After 2020 threw a wrench into plans for many local Veterans Day celebrations, numerous groups around San Luis Obispo County are holding events this year to honor our military service members.
Here’s a roundup of some of the celebrations taking place around the Central Coast this week. A few include special deals for active and former military personnel.
Atascadero Veterans Memorial holds event
The Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial, 8024 Portola Road in Atascadero, will hold a Veterans Day celebration at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Paso Robles museum free to military service members
Entrance to Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles is free to veterans on Thursday.
The museum is located at 4251 Dry Creek Road and is open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Veterans will also receive free hot dogs or hamburgers at noon. Food will also be available for family members but donations are encouraged.
Veterans Day community celebration to be held in SLO
The Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum and American Legion Post No. 66 will host a community celebration between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday in San Luis Obispo.
The event will take place at the museum, located at 801 Grand Ave.
It will include a $5 lunch with hot dogs and hamburgers between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., a bounce house, an on-site blood drive and a kids’ craft table.
Museum entrance will be free during the day for self-guided tours.
Cambria Veterans Day celebration includes DA’s speech
American Legion Post No. 432 will host a public Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Building in Cambria on Thursday.
The event will start at 11 a.m. outside the building at 1000 Main St. and will include a a $5 barbecue lunch. San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow will be the keynote speaker.
Downtown SLO Farmers Market celebrates Veterans Day
The San Luis Obispo Veterans Services Collaborative has partnered with the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association for a special Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market honoring veterans on Thursday night.
Numerous booths and activities aimed toward military service members and their families will be available on Morro Street in downtown San Luis Obispo between 6 and 8 p.m.
According to the Downtown Association, Thursday’s market will also feature a SLO Veterans Services Collaborative anniversary celebration.
The first 50 veterans to check in at the SLO Veterans Services Collaborative booth will receive a gift bag with a voucher for a free pulled pork sandwich from Old San Luis BBQ and other treats to thank them for their service. Two randomly selected veterans will also receive gift certificates for zipline tours at Margarita Adventures in Santa Margarita.
Pismo Beach honors veterans on pier
The Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce will host a Veterans Day celebration on the pier starting at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Cal Poly football to hold Heroes Night
In honor of Veterans Day, San Luis Obispo County veterans can get in free to Cal Poly’s football game against Idaho State on Saturday.
According to Cal Poly Sports’ website, the theme of Saturday’s game is Heroes Night, featuring free admission for veterans and first responders. The game kicks off at 5:05 p.m. at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on the Cal Poly campus.
The first 2,000 fans in the stadium will also get free camouflage beanies. More information on tickets is available through Cal Poly’s ticket office.
Also on Saturday, the Allan Hancock Community College football game in Santa Maria will be free to all active and former military personnel who show military identification at the gate.
