Storm rips away part of popular Pismo Beach staircase — closing it indefinitely

The stairs leading down to the sand at the end of Pier Avenue in Shell Beach have been closed to the public.

They are currently missing a vital piece.

During Monday’s rain storm, one of the bluffs supporting the staircase washed away due to the strong waves in the area, Pismo Beach spokesman Jorge Garcia told The Tribune on Tuesday.

The waves left a gaping hole below one of the stairway’s supports, with the metal piece dangling off the landing with nothing to hold onto.

Due to high surf in that area, Garcia said, the city has “not been able to fully evaluate the extent of the damage.”

“To protect the public, we have closed access to the stairs until such a time as we can evaluate a repair,” he said.

The storm that hit San Luis Obispo County on Sunday night through Monday dumped several inches of rain on parts of the county, bringing 16-foot swells along the coast.

Waves are expected to get smaller throughout the rest of the week.
