A man died in an ”unfortunate accident” while working at the Cayucos Water Treatment Plant construction site on Sept. 30, according to the Cayucos Sanitary District, which oversees the plant.

The construction worker was a directional drilling subcontractor working for the pipeline general contractor, the Cayucos Sanitary District said in a statement on its website.

The statement also expressed condolences from the sanitary district’s board of directors.

“The Cayucos Sanitary District board of directors and staff, together with the community of Cayucos, express their deepest condolences to the family affected by this unfortunate accident,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and his fellow coworkers during this time.”

The sanitary district said “all emergency protocols were followed and the proper authorities are investigating.”

The district said it could not provide any further details regarding the death when reached out to for comment.

Construction on the $25 million water treatment plant, located at 800 Toro Creek Road, broke ground in 2018 and was expected to be completed the end of this summer. The project was still underway as of Wednesday, according to the sanitary district’s website.
