SLO is helping new businesses open faster. Here’s how
The city of San Luis Obispo has established a new program to fast-track tenant improvements.
The program, called the Tenant Improvement Fast Tracking Program (TIPP-FAST), is designed to streamline the review of tenant improvement (TI) projects to help them open and operate as quickly as possible.
The fast track option includes nearly all tenant improvement projects within existing buildings that don’t include structural modifications or changes in use that require infrastructure capacity review will qualify.
The program is part of San Luis Obispo’s 2020-2021 goals for economic stability, recovery and resiliency.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has made tenanting commercial space more difficult,” said Matt Quaglino, owner of Quaglino Properties. “We appreciate the efforts made by the city of San Luis Obispo to fast track the permit process for new businesses in the city. We used TIPP-FAST to replace Peet’s Coffee on Higuera with the new Teazers World Tea Market, and with a one-week turnaround on the plan check, that project is moving forward on time.”
The city said that the program was initially designed to assist business and property owners with timely reopening and modifications to business operations in response to COVID-19. But it’s available to all qualifying tenant improvement projects.
“SLO wants to ensure that new businesses getting ready to open can do so, as quickly and safely as possible,” the city wrote in a news release. “By assigning these tenant improvement permits to staff as a priority, and making the processing timeframe just one week, the city will play an important role in economic development benefiting the whole community.”
