A new Black Lives Matter group in San Luis Obispo draws hundreds to first event
Several hundred people attended “Take Care of SLO,” an educational event hosted Saturday at Mitchell Park by the newly formed Black Lives Matter Community Action.
BLM Community Action combines many of the loosely formed groups that have been involved in the Black Lives Matter movement in San Luis Obispo.
“This is our first event where we really brought everyone formally together, said Nancy Lagunas, the “Take Care of SLO” co-coordinator. “We have kind of been organizing some other protests and events kind of loosely, but this is the very first time (we got together).“
“We have an idea, and that idea is taking care of SLO,” Lagunas said. “We wanted to showcase all the different organizations here that are taking care of our community.“
“Several speakers from individual groups such as Hope’s Village, GALA Pride, Restorative Partners, and RISE, to name a few, came to speak about the intersection of race, oppression and homelessness,” Lagunas said.
BLM Community Action also held a donation drive for 40 Prado and the Transitions Mental Health Association.
“The turnout was great today,” Lagunas said. “We wanted to show some love today.”
