Fire east of Santa Margarita reaches 95% containment

A vegetation fire east of Santa Margarita was 95% contained and no longer threatening structures as of Thursday, according to Cal Fire.

The Pond Fire, which started Saturday afternoon, has burned a total of 1,962 acres, according to field observer mapping of the fire’s perimeter.

As of Thursday, one house and 13 outbuildings were destroyed and another house was damaged, Cal Fire said. Two hundred structures remained threatened.

All evacuation warnings have lifted, although Huer Huero Road remained closed from Highway 58 to Random Canyon, according to Cal Fire.

Twenty-one fire engines, 13 water tenders, four hand crews and three bulldozers were on the scene Thursday morning.

Increased humidity has helped contain the fire, Cal Fire said. Firefighters planned to continue to repair areas damaged by fire suppression tactics, back haul trash and search for hotspots, according to the agency.

Full containment is expected by Saturday, according to Cal Fire.
