To our readers: Photo of SLO protest leader with target mark was an unintentional mistake

To our readers,

Amid the flurry of our coverage of Tuesday’s anti-racism demonstration in San Luis Obispo, we inadvertently published a photo showing march organizer Tianna Arata with what appeared to be a target superimposed on her neck.

This was not intentional, and the image was immediately fixed when we noticed it.

But I wanted to clarify what happened and apologize to Arata on behalf of The Tribune for the obviously disturbing impression it gave.

The image, which appeared in a video, was generated out of the Tribune’s publishing system when a screenshot of the photo was taken instead of the clean image being downloaded. The symbol that appeared is part of the editing and cropping function in our system, not a target mark.

We are sorry for the error and the distress it caused Arata and others. We have reviewed our procedures and will ensure that a similar problem does not occur again.
