SLO County reports sixth coronavirus-related death as local cases soar

A sixth San Luis Obispo County resident has died due to COVID-19, the county Public Health Department reported late Tuesday.

The person was in their 90s and lived at a long-term care facility for the elderly, the county said in a news release. The person was not hospitalized.

According to public health officials, the source of transmission was person-to-person spread at the care facility.

“Our hearts go out to the family and all those who are touched by this loss,” said county Public Health Officer Penny Borenstein said in a written statement.

The death follows the announcement Tuesday that San Luis Obispo County has added 72 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus since mid-March to 1,078.

A total of 699 local COVID-19 patients have recovered, the county said, while 359 are recovering at home and 14 are currently hospitalized, with six in the ICU.

The county is reminding people at higher risk to stay home as much as possible. All residents, regardless of risk factors, should take precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The first COVID-19 related death was reported on April 4 and a second on July 1. Three more deaths occurred in San Luis Obispo County last week, including one on Saturday.
