Investigators identify cause of Paso Robles fire that tore through neighborhood

Weed abatement along a path near the riverbed likely caused the River Fire that that destroyed two homes and damaged nine others on Monday afternoon, Paso Robles officials said Friday.

The fire was reported at about 1:55 p.m. Monday at South River Road and Navajo Avenue.

“Preliminary findings indicate the cause of the fire is likely related to weed abatement operations being conducted along the Navajo pathway,” city officials stated in a news release.

Fanned by high winds and fueled by dry vegetation, the fire quickly spread and jumped South River Road, immediately threatening over 60 homes, Paso Robles city officials stated in a press release.

The cause of the fire was investigated by the San Luis Obispo County Fire Investigation Strike Team.

The fire was fully contained and all evacuation orders were lifted by 3 p.m. Tuesday.
