Coast Guard calls off search for missing Cal Poly SLO student in Hawaii

The search for a Cal Poly student who went missing during a spearfishing trip in Hawaii has been called off, Cal Poly officials confirmed Saturday.

In a letter emailed to students, parents and the Cal Poly community, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong and Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey confirmed junior Malcolm Davis recently went missing while on vacation, and that a Coast Guard search for him has been called off.

The letter says that Malcolm was majoring in business administration and a member of Cal Poly’s Triathlon club sports team.

“It is with profound sadness that we write you today about one of our students, Malcolm Davis,” the letter signed by Armstrong and Humphrey states. “Early last week, Malcolm went missing during a spearfishing trip with friends off Mahukona Beach Park, located on the Big Island of Hawaii. A subsequent Coast Guard search for him was eventually called off.”

Malcom’s family will host a celebration of life for him this weekend, according to the letter.

“The university remains in contact with Malcolm’s family to offer our full support,” Armstrong and Humphrey said. “Our hearts and thoughts are with them, his friends, and his teammates during this extremely difficult time.”

“Please know that we care about each of you.”

The family has set up a public Facebook page, Aloha for Malcolm. In lieu of flowers the Davis Family asks you to make a donation to the newly established Malcolm Davis Memorial Fund.

They encourage family and friends to visit the Office of the Dean of Students’ In Memoriam page at https://deanofstudents.calpoly.edu/memoriam.

Counseling services are available virtually for Cal Poly students 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling 805-756-2511. For additional support, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 805-756-0327 or email deanofstudents@calpoly.edu.
