7 test positive for coronavirus in SLO County care facility outbreak

San Luis Obispo County health officials have confirmed an outbreak of coronavirus at a local residential care facility for the elderly.

According to a county news release Tuesday night, the Public Health Department was contacted Monday when a staff member and resident at Vista Rosa Assisted Living in San Luis Obispo tested positive for COVID-19.

County Public Health then tested more than 40 people connected to the facility, including residents and staff, and discovered seven people who tested positive.

Four staff members and three residents were shown to have the virus, according to the news release.

County officials say they are working with the facility to isolate or quarantine those who tested positive or who may have been exposed to the virus.

“We know COVID-19 is especially dangerous at these types of facilities, as those who live there are typically at high risk of serious COVID-19 illness and fatalities,” county Public Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein said in the news release. “We are focused on preventing a larger outbreak. Those who are ill are recovering in isolation from others.”

Of those who tested positive, one is hospitalized but stable and the other individuals are currently in stable condition at their residence, according to the release.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 356 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in San Luis Obispo County.
