Kristin Smart went missing 24 years ago. Event to honor her on Memorial Day
Cal Poly student Kristin Smart went missing 24 years ago on Monday and a commemoration is scheduled Monday evening in Shell Beach to honor her.
A group will meet in the parking lot behind Rooster Creek Tavern (200 E. Branch St.), and head west in a caravan on Grand Avenue, then north on Dolliver Street to reach Smart’s memorial in Shell Beach at 200 Cliff Ave. The public is invited.
“Anyone who wants to is welcome to bring blankets or candles to relax and enjoy the sunset in Shell Beach in memory of Kristin,” event coordinators noted. “The family’s request is that everyone should maintain a safe six-foot distance if you decide to get out of your cars at the Point of Hope, and avoid crowding the point itself by spacing out on the grass area in front of it.”
Organizers also are asking people to state their plans to attend to get a rough head count prior to the gathering: https://facebook.com/events/s/cruise-for-kristin/654804428704624/?ti=icl.
In February, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s office served search warrants in connection with the case at four locations in California and Washington, including one at the San Pedro home of Paul Flores, the last person seen with Smart after she attended a party.
An additional search warrant was served at Flores’ home in April.
Local podcaster Chris Lambert produced the free series called “Your Own Backyard,” which has sparked renewed interest in Smart’s disappearance.
