Arroyo Grande cancels Strawberry Festival replacement. ‘Its debut will have to wait’

There won’t be any strawberry-themed festivities in Arroyo Grande this Memorial Day weekend.

Only a couple of months after announcing the annual Strawberry Festival in the Village was being rebranded and refocused as the Strawberry Celebration, the South County Chambers of Commerce have canceled the inaugural event.

“Without the Strawberry Celebration event originally planned for Memorial Day weekend in Arroyo Grande, the end of May will look a lot different than in years past,” read a Chamber news release Friday.

According to the release, the event was canceled because of coronavirus tourism restrictions limiting the number of visitors to the South County city.

“Though we value visitors and look forward to when they can come visit again, the Central Coast is not yet open to tourism,” San Luis Obispo County public information officer Whitney Szentisi said in the release.

It is unclear if the event will be rescheduled for next year. The release said only that “its debut will have to wait.”

When the Chamber announced it was changing the name and reducing the size of the annual event in February, CEO Jocelyn Brennan said this year’s changes were only temporary.

In the coming years, it is possible there will be no strawberry-themed event Memorial Day weekend, she said.
