San Luis Obispo’s water supply is safe and reliable, according to city officials, who note they’ve had several questions regarding water quality amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a news release, city officials reassured customers their tap supply “continues to be of the highest quality and is completely safe to drink.”

“There is no threat to your public drinking water supply and no need to use bottled water,” San Luis Obispo officials said in the release.

SLO water treatment disinfects viruses

The city’s water treatment processes are “specifically designed to protect the public from all viruses and harmful bacteria,” the city stated, and “current treatment methods used by the city of San Luis Obispo will disinfect water for viruses, including (the virus that causes) COVID-19.”

“The city also maintains a small and safe amount of chlorine within its water pipelines to ensure that the water delivered remains safe after it leaves the water treatment plant and is delivered to our community,” San Luis Obispo officials said.

San Luis Obispo said its water is safe for hand washing.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that residents continue to use and drink tap water as usual — including washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

City says water services will continue

According to city officials, San Luis Obispo employs more than 70 people who will continue to work to ensure water services are provided.

The water and wastewater facilities staff has been practicing social distancing, ceasing public tours of facilities and have adequate supplies on hand to perform work duties, the city said.

“We have also implemented additional infection control measures including increasing the frequency of workplace cleaning, canceling non-essential business travel, and utilizing teleconferencing in place of in-person meetings where feasible,” San Luis Obispo officials said. “The community can rely on the city for a safe supply of water.”

SLO water bills can be paid remotely

To support social distancing and limit person-to-person contact, city customers have the option to pay their bills by phone through a free automated payment at 805-781-7133 or can use a bill drop box outside City Hall, 990 Palm St. in San Luis Obispo.
