SLO Farmers Market is being suspended due to coronavirus concerns
One of downtown San Luis Obispo’s most popular events is on hold due to coronavirus concerns.
The Downtown San Luis Obispo Farmers Market will be suspended through the end of March, effective Thursday, organizers said in a news release.
“The health and wellness of our community is our top priority and we must make sure we are making decisions in their best interest under the advisement of public health officials,” Downtown SLO CEO Bettina Swigger said in the release, sent Thursday morning.
Swigger said organizers made the “difficult decision” to suspend the farmers market — which brings hundreds of people to downtown San Luis Obispo every Thursday night — at the direction of the California Department of Public Health.
On Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom and top health officials announced that Californians should cancel or postpone events with more than 250 people to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Swigger said the San Luis Obispo farmers market will resume operations on April 2.
As of Thursday evening, no other local farmers markets had been postponed or canceled, according to the San Luis Obispo County Farmers’ Market Association.
“We anticipate it being the only one due to its large size,” the association said via Facebook.
