Coronavirus worries postpone Spartan race in Paso Robles wine country

San Luis Obispo County’s first Spartan obstacle course race has been postponed at the recommendation of the county Public Health Department.

The race, which was scheduled to take place at Santa Margarita Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, has been postponed due to worries about the spread of coronavirus, according to a news release sent Wednesday.

The two-day event was expected to bring around 7,000 participants from 11 countries to Paso Robles wine country.

According to the release, some of the registered participants hail from cities with local transmission of coronavirus.

“It is important to cancel this event to protect the health of the participants and, ultimately, the health of our entire community,” public health officer Dr. Penny Borenstein said in the release. “This is an event that by its nature includes close physical contact. With attendees planning to participate from across California and across the world, we need to take a proactive approach to prevent the spread of illness.”

The Public Health Department is closely monitoring events scheduled in San Luis Obispo County County, according to the release.

Several other events have been postponed, including a concert at San Luis Obispo’s Fremont Theater on Saturday and the Inspired Health and Wellness Expo in San Luis Obispo on March 21.

Race organizers are expected to announce a new date for the race later this week.
