Vandenberg will launch a test missile next week. Here’s when and why

Vandenberg Air Force Base will conduct a missile test next week — the first since it joined the United States Space Force.

According to a news release Friday, Air Force Global Strike Command is expected to conduct a test launch of its unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile on Feb. 5.

The launch will take place between 12:08 a.m. and 6:08 a.m.

According to the release, this will be the first test launch on the Western Range since the 30th Space Wing became part of the United States Space Force.

”This launch marks a very special moment in our nation’s history,” Col. Anthony Mastalir said in the release. “Providing the range support needed to facilitate this launch showcases how the Space Force will continue to support and integrate into the joint fight to ensure national security for our country.”

The launch allows the Air Force to test its systems and procedures, and is not related to any real world events, according to the release.
