Planet Fitness is opening a new 24-hour gym in SLO County. Here’s where

If you’d like more options for midnight workouts in Arroyo Grande, you’re in luck — a 24-hour gym is coming to the city.

Planet Fitness marketing director Shannon Meyers confirmed to The Tribune on Monday that the gym chain will open a new location in Arroyo Grande sometime in early March.

The new 17,000-square-foot gym will be located at 1576 W. Branch St., in what used to be the Kmart shopping center.

According to its website, Planet Fitness “strives to create a workout environment where everyone feels accepted and respected.” The company was founded in Dover, NH in 1992 and has since grown to include more than 1,800 locations in the United States and abroad.

The Arroyo Grande gym will offer “state-of-the art-cardio and strength equipment, our 30-minute express circuit, free fitness training, fully equipped locker rooms and showers, HydroMassage loungers, massage chairs, tanning beds and more,” Meyers said.

According to Meyers, presale for gym memberships in Arroyo Grande launched on Monday, and the company is encouraging those interested to sign up at its temporary presale location, 1538 W. Branch St.

A Planet Fitness gym membership for the Arroyo Grande location will cost you between $10 per month and $19.99 per month with an introductory “pre-opening” deal, according to the website. The deal lasts through Feb. 13.

“We are very excited to bring Planet Fitness to Arroyo Grande,” Meyers added.

Planet Fitness has another gym in San Luis Obispo County, located in Paso Robles, as well as Central Coast locations in Santa Maria and Lompoc.

What are other tenants for old Kmart building development?

The gym is one of several expected tenants for the new construction taking place at the old Kmart building on Branch Street.

The former building was torn down in mid-2019 to make way for a 23,00-square-foot development that would feature a grocery store, hardware store and gym.

A Grocery Outlet is expected to open in the largest space, though brand representatives have not officially confirmed the new location. A beer and wine license at the location is still pending, according to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Coastal Dance and Music Academy was initially expected to take over one of the smaller spaces in the development, according to previous Tribune reports, but the dance studio has since announced it is shutting down.
