2 injured, Highway 1 blocked after delivery truck crashes into van

Two men were injured in a crash in Cambria on Monday morning, when a delivery truck hit a van on Highway 1.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 63-year-old Jeffrey LaChance was driving a 2017 Ford Transit van westbound on Weymouth Street approaching the Highway 1 intersection when he came to a stop sign around 9:35 a.m.

LaChance did not see 35-year-old Rafael Garcia, who was driving down Highway 1 in a 2010 Freightliner MT45 (a delivery truck) at the same time, CHP said. LaChance turned into the northbound lanes directly in front of Garcia.

Drivers on Highway 1 do not have a stop sign at that intersection.

According to CHP, the front end of the delivery truck hit the right side of the van. The van overturned and snapped a wooden power pole before coming to rest on its roof.

LaChance was extricated form the van and transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo with moderate to major injuries, according to CHP. Garcia was self-transported to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton for minor injuries.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor.

The downed power line blocked Highway 1 for about 40 minutes, according to the CHP, before PG&E was able to respond and cut the downed line. The CHP says the power line will be repaired by PG&E at a later date.
