SLO woman drives hours every week to care for mom. So Placer County deputies got her a gift

A San Luis Obispo woman got an unexpected Christmas gift while shopping in Auburn.

The woman, identified only as Amanda, was shopping at a Goodwill in town when she was surprised by Placer County Sheriff’s Office deputies with $200 in gift cards.

According to a post on the Placer County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page, the deputies ran into Amanda while she was shopping with her 18-month-old twin girls on Thursday and learned that she drives from San Luis Obispo to Auburn — a roughly five hour, 324-mile trip one-way — to care for her sick mother.

In response, the deputies gave Amanda some of their “Secret Santa” gift cards, according to the Facebook post. The department is currently running “Operation: Secret Santa” in which they award gift cards to people in need they discover around the community.

The program was thanks to an anonymous donor who gave the Sheriff’s Office $11,000 in $100 Visa gift cards to help families in need.

“We recognize some people need a helping hand to get back on their feet, and are honored to have the opportunity to help positively impact our community, and help spread some holiday cheer,” read a Facebook post from the department on Dec. 19.
