Holiday ate your savings? The 2020 Census needs workers — and pay starts at $21 per hour
If you went a little overboard with holiday spending this year, here’s a chance to earn some cash.
The U.S. Census Bureau is currently hiring workers for its 2020 Census, including thousands of positions in the San Luis Obispo County area, according to bureau spokeswoman Vanessa Moreno.
Moreno said the Census Bureau is looking for people to go door-to-door filling out census forms for those that don’t choose to fill out the census online, by phone or by mail.
The pay starts at $21 per hour, and includes training, she said. Workers have flexible schedules and receive weekly paychecks.
“This is a great job for students, including high school students ... gig workers, those trying to get back into the job market, or just anyone who just spent a little too much over the holidays, and just wants to get that back,” Moreno told The Tribune on Thursday.
But you’ll need to act fast.
Because the jobs are federal positions, they require a background check which can take some time.
Moreno said the bureau hopes to have everyone hired and ready to start training by mid-February. The actual job starts in March and will continue until around mid-May, she said.
People interested in census jobs should apply between now and mid-January, though as early as possible is preferable, she said.
To apply, go to 2020census.gov/en/jobs.html. Applicants don’t need a resume, but will be required to answer a 32-question survey.
Bilingual speakers are particularly encouraged to apply, Moreno said.
