Paso Robles man thrown from car in rollover crash may have been on phone, CHP says

A Paso Robles man who was seriously injured Monday afternoon in a solo rollover crash may have been using his cellphone while driving, the CHP said.

Joshua Alexander Sims, 20, was driving a 2002 Ford Focus at a high rate of speed on northbound River Road about 1.7 miles north of River Oaks Drive outside Paso Robles, the CHP said, when he failed to navigate a left curve and lost control of the vehicle.

The Focus rotated in a clockwise motion as it slid across the roadway surface and struck a wire fence while the vehicle was overturning, the agency said.

The CHP said Sims was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled over.

He was transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo on Monday afternoon, the CHP said. His condition was not immediately available Tuesday morning.

Officials say distracted driving may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
