SLO’s first cannabis delivery business is open — and more could be on the way

Legal marijuana is now available to order in San Luis Obispo.

The city’s first cannabis delivery company, Coastal Delivery SLO, began operating this week.

Customers now can order from Coastal Delivery SLO’s online menu, buy cannabis using weedmaps.com or make a purchase via phone.

Though the Santa Barbara-based business has an office in San Luis Obispo, Coastal Delivery SLO can deliver cannabis orders anywhere in San Luis Obispo County. The Railroad District location off Broad Street is not open for retail cannabis service.

Cannabis products for sale range roughly from $15 to $100, depending on the product, said Myles Peck, Coastal Delivery SLO’s director of business development. Those include flowers, vape pens, edibles and baked goods.

For example, a 10-pack of cannabis chocolate chip cookies costs $21.50, a CBD gummy package costs $25, and an eighth of an ounce of indica flower called Ember Valley costs $59, according to the online menu.

“As one of the few delivery services in the region, we take our responsibility of stewardship seriously,” company CEO Julian Michalowski said. “We believe in the importance of working together as an industry and are committed to being a thoughtful, trusted, and responsible community partner.”

Coastal Delivery SLO, which opened for business on Monday, currently employs 10 workers in San Luis Obispo, including dispatchers, drivers, and inventory employees.

“We see our number of employees expanding as the business grows,” Peck said.

Business hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Cannabis delivery company based in Santa Barbara

Coastal Delivery SLO’s parent business, Coastal Dispensary LLC, currently operates a dispensary in a 6,000-square-foot facility at 1019 Chapala St. in Santa Barbara.

The company is currently building a delivery, distribution and manufacturing hub in downtown Santa Barbara, along with a retail dispensary in Lompoc, company officials said in a news release.

Coastal Delivery is on track to reach more than 100 employees in the region at each of its operations by next year, the release said.

Coastal employees are compensated for participating in quarterly community service activities, getting paid for a normal work day while volunteering, the company said

And the company donates 2% of net profits back into the community.

Coastal also announced a partnership with the nonprofit Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO) as part of its efforts to give back to the community. Through the company’s program “Coastal Cares,” it will allocate employees to volunteer for ECOSLO and contribute some of its profits to the organization.

“We are focused on highlighting the importance of a healthy, happy, and active lifestyle and will strive to foster this in all aspects of our operations — from our company culture to the products we sell,” said Devon Wardlow, Coastal’s director of public affairs.

More marijuana businesses slated to open in SLO

Four additional cannabis businesses in San Luis Obispo have been granted operator permits and are planning to open next year.

Those include retail storefronts of Megan’s Organic Market and Natural Healing Center.

Those two retail businesses yet haven’t received building permits for site improvements, said SLO’s Community Development Director Michael Codron.

But Megan’s plans to open its doors at 280 Higuera St. to retail service in March 2020 and Natural Healing Center at 2640 Broad St. is scheduled to open in June 2020, said Charlene Rosales, the city’s economic development manager.

Cannabis company SLO Cal Roots at 3535 S. Higuera St. has received a contingent operator permit for retail services, pending the successful completion of a background check, Rosales said.

Element 7, a manufacturing, distribution and delivery business, has been granted an operator permit as well.

“There is a cap of three permits available for retail storefronts and so after a year of operations, we will come back to the City Council in late 2020 to see if they want to have more, after experiencing several months of these businesses being operational,” Rosales said.
