One of San Luis Obispo County’s largest employers is Atascadero State Hospital, a forensic psychiatric facility that houses and treats about 1,130 patients with a staff of approximately 2,050, according to spokesman Philip Koziel.
The facility treats male mentally disordered offenders, men who have been found not guilty by insanity, and men charged with crimes but who have been deemed mentally incompetent to participate in their defense.
ASH is one of six psychiatric hospitals in California and is currently overseen by acting executive director Jason Black, who in 2018 made $118,288 in salary plus about $64,500 in annual health and other benefits, according to data provided to The Tribune by the state Controller’s Office.
The facility has more than 110 job classifications and regularly hosts career fairs for openings.
