California Men’s Colony, a low- to medium-security prison on the outskirts of San Luis Obispo, is one of the county’s largest employers.
A staff of approximately 1,800 (not including contractors) California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation employees at the prison is responsible for the custody and care of roughly 3,800 inmates at any time, according to spokesman Lt. John Hill.
Overseen by Warden Josie Gastelo — who in 2018 made $155,844 in salary plus about $94,750 in annual health and other benefits — the facility has more than 100 job classifications, according to data provided to The Tribune by the state Controller’s Office.
