Templeton security guard killed in freak parking lot accident

A 52-year-old security guard was killed Monday morning in Templeton in a parking lot accident involving a senior citizen driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Gregory S. Norwood of Paso Robles was helping a driver, 77-year-old Pedro Islasmejia, maneuver to park in a marked spot at Community Health Centers, 325 Posada Lane, when Islasmejia mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, CHP officials said.

The 1997 Honda moved rapidly forward and crashed into Norwood. He was taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Neither Islasmejia nor his passenger, 67-year-old Maria E. Cardenas of Paso Robles, suffered injuries.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision. The incident is under investigation.
