Santa Maria schools to reopen Tuesday after Thomas Fire smoke closure
Santa Maria schools will be back in session Tuesday after temporarily closing because of smoke from the Thomas Fire this week.
Santa Maria-Bonita, Santa Maria Joint Union High, Orcutt Union and Guadalupe Union all closed Monday, because of air quality concerns from the smoke that spread north across Santa Barbara County this weekend.
All of the above school district will resume classes Tuesday, though they will restrict outside activity for students.
Parents of children with asthma or other respiratory conditions are asked to “use your best judgment regarding their attendance in school.”
“The air quality reports have improved since Sunday and air quality is presently good and predicted to improve over the next few days,” read a statement on the Santa Maria-Bonita School District website. “We will continue to monitor the air quality reports and make decisions that support the health and safety of our students and staff.”
