Garden Street reopens in downtown SLO with a new look

Garden Street in downtown San Luis Obispo has reopened after several months of being closed for construction of the Garden Street Terraces.

The roadway between Higuera and Marsh streets recently reopened with a slightly different look, allowing for one-way traffic rather than two lanes flowing in either direction.

There are more diagonal parking spaces and larger sidewalks for the many businesses lining the street.

“We love it,” said Anna Bore, manager at Scout Coffee Co. at 1130 Garden St. “We’re glad to have the street back open again so it’s not super inconvenient.”

Bore said she wasn’t entirely sure how the construction may have impacted business at that location, given Scout Coffee Co. opened a second store and much of the construction took place during the summer months when Cal Poly students are not in San Luis Obispo.

The Garden Street Terraces includes 93,425 square feet of commercial, residential and hotel space. The final approved project has a 65-room hotel, eight luxury residential units totaling 8,640 square feet and 41 private parking spaces.
