Cal Fire San Luis Obispo County is investigating a possible arson attempt Saturday morning after a Paso Robles woman discovered a homemade incendiary device on the side of the road.

Lacey Burwick Nay was driving on Peachy Canyon Road when she saw smoke rising from vegetation on the side of the road.

“So I stopped and got out to check it and saw the lit cigarette with the matches tied together with a rubber band,” Burwick Nay told The Tribune. “I called the fire department right away to report it.”

Cal Fire spokesman Chris Elms said his agency responded to the call at about 9 a.m. and is investigating the incident. He declined to comment on the nature of the incendiary device while the investigation is ongoing.

The device started a small fire that was quickly put out, Elms said.
