A lost calf wandering in the aftermath of the Alamo Fire east of Santa Maria on Thursday got a helping hand — and a ride — from Cal Fire.

A photo posted to the Cal Fire San Luis Obispo County Twitter account shows a smiling firefighter in his vehicle with the small calf riding in the back seat.

“This calf was helped out of the mop-up area,” the tweet reads.

Cleanup and firefighting efforts continued Thursday, one week after the blaze began. So far, the fire has burned nearly 29,000 acres.
