A shark was sighted near Morro Bay on Wednesday, according to the Morro Bay Harbor Department, which posted signs to warn surfers and beach-goers.

A commercial fisherman spotted the shark at 10 a.m. about two and a half miles offshore, said Eric Endersby, the harbor director. The fisherman who reported the sighting said he was within 25 to 30 feet of a great white shark, Endersby said.

“It’s getting fairly common up and down the coast,” Endersby said. “Sharks are a fact of life and people have to be careful and aware.”

Additional information, such as the type of shark, was not immediately available.
