Firestone Walker, San Antonio Winery nominated for Wine Star awards

Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and San Antonio Winery have been nominated for Wine Enthusiast magazine’s annual Wine Star awards.

Firestone is one of five nominees for Brewery of the Year, a category added two years ago.

Wine Enthusiast called Firestone, now the fourth- largest craft brewery in the state, “a regional brewery that combines European sensibility and California spirit” and noted that it’s one of only two breweries in the world that uses oak barrel fermentation in a version of the Burton Union system, first developed in England in the 1830s.

San Antonio Winery, which recently opened a new winery in Paso Robles, is among five nominees for American Winery of the Year. The magazine notes the upcoming 100th anniversary of the winery, which was founded in 1917 by an Italian immigrant in

Los Angeles.

“In addition to its creative approach to marketing, San Antonio brings a wide range of wines to consumers via a wine shop, restaurant and banquet hall,” the magazine stated.

Justin Vineyards and Winery was the magazine’s American Winery of the Year in 2015, while Paso Robles was named Wine Region of the Year in 2013.

Winners of the 17th annual awards will be announced in November.
