ACLU to hold Constitution Day celebration in SLO

The local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will hold a Constitution Day celebration on Saturday with a barbecue at Santa Rosa Park, beginning at 1 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the recently reconstituted San Luis Obispo chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, “recognizes the day Congress has designated to pay tribute to one of the nation’s founding documents.”

The day of the celebration marks the anniversary of the vote to approve the Constitution so it could be sent to the states for ratification.

The barbecue will feature Constitution-centered games, speakers on ratification and the Bill of Rights, and educational materials. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children.

The local ACLU chapter was reformed last year, after several years of inactivity. Chapter President Stew Jenkins has not yet announced a date for an anticipated general membership meeting. About 1,000 San Luis Obispo County residents are members of the ACLU, according to the organization.
