Cal Poly will switch to online classes for start of spring quarter

Update 11 a.m. Sunday, March 15

Cal Poly will require faculty to hold virtual final evaluations, according to an email sent by Cal Poly President Jeffery Armstrong on Saturday. The change comes after the first case of COVID-19 in San Luis Obispo County was confirmed.

Original story:

Cal Poly’s first two weeks of spring quarter will be held entirely online, the university announced Friday.

In an email to campus on Friday evening, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong said administration has decided to offer virtual classes the first two weeks of the spring quarter, which is set to begin April 6.

Cal Poly is also encouraging faculty to offer virtual final evaluations.

This comes after the college had already announced plans to push back the spring quarter, amid concerns about a potential coronavirus outbreak.

The university has also canceled spring events like Open House, PolyCultural Weekend and the annual Poly Royal Rodeo and Tractor Pull, among other smaller campus-based events.

“We will continue to assess this evolving situation and provide updates in the future,” Armstrong said in the Friday email.

The campus will still stay open during spring break and the start of the spring closure, Armstrong added.

Cuesta College announced Friday it will suspend classes and transition to online instruction starting next week. K-12 schools throughout San Luis Obispo County are also expected to close for varying lengths of time starting Monday.
