SLO County COVID cases drop — but more deaths reported

Reported cases of COVID-19 have leveled off this week, despite three new deaths among San Luis Obispo County residents.

Public Health data showed seven patients were hospitalized with severe COVID-19 on Wednesday, with one person in intensive care.

On Wednesday, the county reported three more deaths due to COVID-19, involving people from their 70s to 90s, according to a statement from Public Health posted on Facebook.

Locally, 545 people have died from the virus.

The latest numbers came a day after Public Health said San Luis Obispo County will receive updated boosters targeting omicron variant BA.4 and BA.5 soon.

Overall, San Luis Obispo County added 183 new coronavirus cases since Wednesday, according to data from the county Public Health department.

Here’s how local coronavirus case numbers from the past seven days break down day by day:

  • Thursday: 48
  • Friday: 40
  • Saturday: 14
  • Sunday: 17
  • Monday: 12
  • Tuesday: 13
  • Wednesday: 39
  • The drop in reported COVID-19 cases last week drove down the two-week new case average to 40, the lowest the average has been since May 15.

The number of active cases now stands at 213. The last time the number of active cases was lower than 213 was in April 25 when 203 cases were reported.

The number of COVID-19 cases recorded by the county does not include positive tests taken at home, meaning the true weekly COVID-19 incidence is higher than the numbers reported.

Also, the clinics were closed for the Labor Day holiday, according to Public Health.

In total, 63,323 San Luis Obispo County residents have tested positive for coronavirus since March 2020.

The agency on Sept. 7 released data showing that unvaccinated people account for about 62% of COVID-19 cases, 70% of hospitalizations and 64% of deaths since June 15, 2021.

Over the past seven days these are the top coronavirus cases by city: 36 in Paso Robles, 21 in Atascadero and 20 in Paso Robles.
