SLO County passes 50,000 positive COVID cases, reports 10 more deaths

San Luis Obispo County reported another 10 new deaths due to COVID-19 on Thursday as local doctors continue to classify a backlog of recent cases.

The county also hit another notable milestone this week, surpassing 50,000 total positive cases over the course of the pandemic. That number now stands at 50,415.

The latest deaths occurred in the 30-49, 65-84 and 85+ age range. They bring the county’s pandemic total to 424.

Meanwhile, other metrics continue to improve as the omicron variant eases its grip on the county.

On Thursday, the number of people being treated at county hospitals dropping below 30 for the first time this year. It’s now at 29, including seven people in the intensive care unit.

The 14-day rolling average of new daily cases has dropped to 292, the first time it’s been under 300 in nearly a month and half what it was just nine days ago.

Since the last update on Tuesday, the county recorded 695 new cases. The number of active cases is at 1,746, half what it was less than two weeks ago.

Here’s how local coronavirus case numbers from the past two days break down day by day:

  • Wednesday: 470
  • Thursday: 225
  • The agency on Feb. 8 released data showing that unvaccinated people account for about 65% of COVID-19 cases, 77% of hospitalizations and 72% of deaths since June 15.

    Yesterday, Public Health announced plans to lift the indoor mask mandate for vaccinated people starting next Wednesday, in line with the state Public Health Department. Some locations such as schools, public transit and child care centers, will still require masks.

    Unvaccinated people will still be required to wear a mask in all locations.

    The locations of 45 cases were listed as “other.” A total of 447 cases remained under investigation.

    Outbreaks at the California Men’s Colony state prison, Cal Poly and Atascadero State Hospital have been greater than indicated by county data, according to data from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Cal Poly and the Department of State Hospitals.

    CDCR had recorded 2,977 total coronavirus cases among CMC inmates as of Feb. 10, with 124 active cases in custody and 155 new cases in the past 14 days. A total of 13 inmates have died due to COVID-19.

    DSH reported on Feb. 9 that 307 patients have tested positive at Atascadero State Hospital since May 2020. The agency reports 15 of those patients have tested positive within the past 14 days.

    ASH has reported at least one but fewer than 11 deaths among patients who tested positive for COVID-19. The facility had no hospitalized coronavirus patients as of Feb. 9 and has not said how many were hospitalized in the past.

    Cal Poly’s documented total of coronavirus cases in the past seven days involving both on-campus and off-campus students was 24 as of Feb. 10.

    Testing is administered at 801 Grand Ave in San Luis Obispo, 1336 Ramona Ave #A in Grover Beach, 209 Surf St. in Morro Bay and 800 Pine St. in Paso Robles.
