10 new COVID deaths reported in San Luis Obispo County. Here are the age ranges
San Luis Obispo County reported 10 new fatalities due to COVID-19 on Tuesday as the omicron surge continues to exact a deadly toll.
The latest deaths occurred in four age ranges: one death in 30-49, one death in 50-64, five deaths in 65-84 and three deaths in 85-plus. They bring the county’s pandemic total to 414, according to the Public Health Department.
Local physicians, coroner and public health staff were clearing a backlog of more than 25 death records that local doctors attributed to COVID-19, according to a Feb. 4 news release from the Public Health Department.
Despite the deaths, other data show that the latest surge is waning, with hospitalizations, new daily cases and active cases all falling.
Over the last four days, 952 new daily cases were reported, dropping the 14-day rolling average to 389, well down from its all-time high of 649 on Jan. 28.
Active cases have also retreated as fast as they rose, to 1,571 on Tuesday after spiking to 4,239, less than two weeks ago.
And local hospitals continue to see some relief. They are now treating 35 COVID-19 patients, including six in the intensive care unit.
Here’s how local coronavirus case numbers from the past four days break down day by day:
Since March 2020, at least 49,720 local residents have contracted COVID-19. The Public Health Department said that this is likely an undercount because positive tests recorded by the county do not include positive at-home coronavirus test results.
The agency reported data on Feb. 8 showing that people who are not fully vaccinated comprise 72% of COVID-19 hospitalizations, nearly 77% of deaths and 65% of cases since June 15, 2021.
