SLO County sees big drop in number of active COVID cases

The number of active COVID-19 cases has plunged in recent days to totals not seen in more than two months, according to the latest data from the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department.

As of Tuesday, Public Health listed 661 active cases of COVID-19 in SLO County. That’s down more than 36% from one week ago and 50% from two weeks prior.

SLO County add 186 new cases over the last four days, but less than 40 new cases in each of the last three days, according to data from the county Public Health Department.

After four deaths were reported on Friday, no new fatalities were announced on Tuesday, leaving the pandemic total at 335 for SLO County.

The condition at local hospitals also continues to improve, with 12 SLO County residents receiving treatment in area facilities, including three in intensive care.

Here’s how local coronavirus case numbers from the past four breaks down day by day:

  • Saturday: 78

  • Sunday: 37
  • Monday: 37
  • Tuesday: 34
  • In total, 28,910 San Luis Obispo County residents have tested positive for coronavirus since March 2020.

The county Public Health Department is not providing information about how many newly reported individual cases, hospitalizations and deaths involve vaccinated and unvaccinated people due to resource limitations and privacy concerns.

Instead, Public Health is releasing weekly data showing the percentages of unvaccinated people who’ve contracted COVID-19, received hospital treatment for the virus or died from it since June 15.

The agency on Oct. 15 released data showing 78.3% COVID-19 cases, 84.3% of hospitalizations and 78.9% of deaths since June 15 have involved unvaccinated people.
