COVID numbers continue to decline in SLO County. Here’s where new cases were added

The number of new daily COVID-19 cases in San Luis Obispo County continues to ease, along with declining numbers of patients being treated at local hospitals, according to the latest data from the Public Health Department.

A total of 16 county residents are currently hospitalized with the virus, including four in intensive care. The number of hospitalized cases is the lowest SLO County has seen in more than two months and is down 75% from a recent peak of 67 on Aug. 31.

The number in the ICU is likewise well off the recent high of 20, also at the end of August.

No new deaths were reported Friday, leaving the county’s total at 331.

In the last three days, public health officials recorded 106 new COVID-19 cases across the county, and the 14-day average of daily new cases has dropped to 50, also the lowest level in two months.

The decline in new cases was also reflected in the number of active cases, which dropped by almost 300 from 1,305 to 1,007 in two days.

Combined, the latest data continues to suggest the summer surge from the Delta variant is waning, just as the fall and cooler weather arrives, which will keep people indoors more and led to the largest spike of the pandemic last year.

Here’s how local coronavirus case numbers from the past three days break down day by day:

  • Wednesday: 21
  • Thursday: 50
  • Friday: 35
  • The county Public Health Department is not providing information about how many newly reported individual cases, hospitalizations and deaths involve vaccinated and unvaccinated people due to resource limitations and privacy concerns.

Instead, Public Health is releasing monthly data showing the percentages of unvaccinated people who’ve contracted COVID-19, received hospital treatment for the virus or died from it since June 15.

The agency on Aug. 31 released data showing 76.9% COVID-19 cases, 85.5% of hospitalizations and 79% of deaths since June 15 have involved unvaccinated people.
