A fifth San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputy tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
According to the Sheriff’s Office news release, the patrol deputy developed symptoms Thursday while at home quarantining after they came into contact with a person who had tested positive for coronavirus. Two days later, their test results came back positive.
This is the second patrol deputy to test positive for the virus. The first tested positive July 19. The other three deputies who have tested positive for coronavirus are correctional deputies who work at the San Luis Obispo County Jail.
Four of the coronavirus-positive sheriff deputies are recovering at home and one has already returned to work, according to the release.
San Luis Obispo County Jail had a coronavirus outbreak last week, with four inmates testing positive for COVID-19. No additional cases among inmates were reported over the weekend.
The jail outbreak will be considered over once there are no positive test results among inmates 14 days after the last positive case, which was July 22, the release said.
According to the release, the Sheriff’s Office continues to quarantine, monitor and test all inmates who may have been exposed to the virus.
The release also said all staff members are screened for coronavirus symptoms at least once per shift and anyone with symptoms is isolated and tested.
