More than 70 SLO County healthcare workers tested positive for COVID-19, officials say
Dozens of San Luis Obispo County healthcare workers have tested positive for coronavirus since mid-March, according to the county Public Health Department.
A total of 71 local healthcare workers have tested positive for COVID-19, public health spokeswoman Michelle Shoresman confirmed Monday morning.
The workers represent a variety of healthcare settings and types of staff members, Shoresman said.
“I cannot name an particular provider, but with that number, it’s likely to have been several in all areas of the healthcare system from (emergency medical services) and hospitals to clinics and doctor’s offices,” Shoresman said.
Shoresman said the county Public Health Department prioritizes coronavirus testing for healthcare workers.
She added that the county recommends safety precautions to a facility depending on the particular risks associated with the case or cases.
“However, since healthcare workers and healthcare businesses are very educated on infection control procedures,” Shoresman said, “many of them are practicing precautions already and may make their own decisions about any changes they feel are necessary due to positive cases in their work forces.”
As of Monday, San Luis Obispo County had reported a total of 1,006 coronavirus cases since mid-March, with 101 new cases recorded over the weekend, the county announced.
The county reported a fifth local death due to COVID-19 on Saturday.
