Cal Poly employee tests positive for coronavirus

A Cal Poly employee who works on campus has tested positive for coronavirus, public health officials warned students and faculty Sunday.

In an email to the campus community, San Luis Obispo County Public Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein and Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs Tina Hadaway-Mellis said the university is working to “ensure that the employee receives all available support.”

The employee has been told to isolate and the public health department is expected to follow up with the person throughout their recovery if necessary, according to the email.

Cal Poly is not releasing more specific information on the employee’s identity or where they worked.

“We understand that this may be concerning to some members of our community who are currently living or working on campus,” read the email. Officials noted that the public health department has begun contact tracing and will reach out to anyone who may have been in close contact with the employee recently.

The university is also “thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting campus facilities and equipment, including those which this employee might have used while infected.”

The school’s summer session began on June 22. All classes are currently being offered virtually in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
