SLO County tops 600 coronavirus cases, sets new record for highest single-day increase
San Luis Obispo County topped 600 cases, adding 44 coronavirus cases Tuesday. The total number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 since March is now 611, according to ReadySLO.org.
Tuesday’s tally broke the record for the highest single-day increase. Prior to Tuesday, the record was 39 new cases reported June 28.
Although cases increased by 44 on Tuesday, active cases were down eight since Monday, leaving 154 active cases.
In recent weeks, San Luis Obispo County has seen an uptick in cases.
In only four days, the county added more than 100 new cases, according to county data.
Templeton, the California Men’s Colony, Morro Bay and Cambria were the only areas listed that did not add cases since Monday.
Paso Robles added eight coronavirus cases, San Luis Obispo added seven, Nipomo added four and Grover Beach added four.
Atascadero, Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach and Los Osos all added three cases each. Oceano added two cases and both San Miguel and Shandon added one.
The location of three of the newest cases are unknown, and two are in areas with less than five cases.
Of the new cases, 20 people contracted the virus through community spread, 13 contracted it from person to person contact and three cases are travel related. Tuesday marks the highest number of new community spread cases reported in a single-day.
Six of the newest cases are minors, 19 are between ages 18 to 49 and 19 are over the age of 50.
SLO County’s COVID-19 cases by the numbers
A majority of San Luis Obispo County residents who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 — 456 — have completely recovered from the illness, with 52 new recoveries reported since Monday.
A total of 140 people are still recovering at home. Fourteen patients, are receiving hospital treatment. Six patients are in intensive care units.
One local resident has died from COVID-19.
The Paso Robles area continues to have the most COVID-19 cases in the county with 161.
Followed by San Luis Obispo, which has 91 cases, and Nipomo with 86. Atascadero has 74 and Arroyo Grande is at 46 cases total.
Templeton has 22 cases, Grover Beach has 20 and Pismo Beach has 18. The California Men’s Colony has reported 11 cases.
Morro Bay has 10, San Miguel has 14, Los Osos has 12, and Shandon has six. Oceano has 10 cases and Cambria has five.
Other areas — defined as cities or communities with fewer than five cases — have 21 cases altogether. And four cases are listed as unknown.
In total, 130 cases involve people ages 50 to 64, 80 cases involve people age 65 to 84, and 13 are people over the age of 85 years old.
There are 167 residents aged 30 to 49 who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 and 160 residents aged 18 to 29 year’s old. The remaining 61 cases involve people age 17 and younger.
In total, the county has determined 72 patients acquired the virus through travel, 267 acquired it through person-to-person contact and 212 contracted it through community spread.
The county has not determined the route of transmission for 60 cases.
San Luis Obispo County public and private health labs have conducted at least 22,312 test. Between Monday and Tuesday, 701 tests were conducted. The San Luis Obispo County Public Health Lab has conducted 5,112 tests with 131 positive results.
Private health labs, which began reporting their negative test results April 13, have conducted at least 17,200 tests with 480 positive results.
Where to get a COVID-19 test
As the coronavirus pandemic continues, testing has increased in San Luis Obispo County.
Pop-up testing clinics will be staffed by county employees and analyzed at the Public Health Department lab, which has recently increased its testing capacity to 300 tests per day.
In addition to the pop-up testing events, free COVID-19 testing is available at ongoing sites in Grover Beach and San Luis Obispo.

Additional pop-up clinics will be available in North County beginning next Monday.
Testing is available through private healthcare providers, urgent care centers and the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Lab.

The county continues to ask that people limit large social gatherings and wear face coverings in public spaces when physical distancing can’t be maintained, in accordance with a state mandate issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
