When will California lift the coronavirus lockdown? Here’s what we know

President Donald Trump issued federal guidelines Thursday for opening the economy back up from coronavirus lockdowns.

The guidelines were for the nation’s governors on how to reopen their states, McClatchy News reported. But some governors already had plans in places.

For California, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a stay-at-home order on March 19.

Newsom outlined requirements on Tuesday for lifting the coronavirus lockdown and what post-virus life could look like, the Sacramento Bee reported.

“I want you to know it’s not, it will not be a permanent state,” Newsom said, according to The Los Angeles Times. “We recognize the consequences of the stay-at-home orders have a profound impact on the economy, your personal household budget, your personal prospects around your future.”

The “new normal” could look like face coverings becoming the norm, staggering start times for schools, and reopening restaurants with fewer tables, the outlet reported.

The six requirements to reopen the state include: monitoring and tracking cases, increasing capacity at hospitals, preventing infection for “high-risk people,” ensuring distancing and therapeutics at businesses, schools and child care facilities, and developing guidelines for another stay-at-home order if virus cases increase again, the Bee reported.

So far, those guidelines haven’t been fully met, so stay-at-home orders remain in place.

California, along with Washington and Oregon, formed a Western States Pact to plan the lifting of stay-at-home orders, according to CNN.

“The virus knows no boundaries, knows no borders. You can’t build walls around it and you can’t deny basic fundamental facts,” Newsom said, according to CNN. “We will be driven by facts, we will be driven by evidence will be driven by science will be driven by our hub public health advisers.”
