See orange, ominous skies over Southern California where new wildfire sparked
Smoke quickly filled the skies over Southern California on Wednesday as a new wildfire, dubbed the Hughes Fire, rapidly grew to more than 5,000 acres, video shows.
The rapidly growing fire near the Castaic jail complex sparked alarm, as attorneys urged the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to evacuate the nearly 5,000 inmates in the county’s northernmost jails.
The Hughes fire broke out a little before 11 a.m., roughly 5 miles north of the Pitchess Detention Center.
Meanwhile, travelers looking to drive to Southern California through the Grapevine needed alternative plans. Interstate 5 was closed due to the Hughes Fire.
