41-year-old family winery destroyed by fast-moving Glass Fire in Napa Valley

A fast-growing Napa Valley wildfire has consumed the Chateau Boswell winery, video shows.

The Glass Fire, which ignited early Sunday morning, has blackened 11,000 acres with 0% containment, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The blaze jumped the Napa River and Silverado Trail, forcing thousands of evacuations in Santa Rosa and St. Helena, KPIX reported.

The wildfire devoured the Chateau Boswell winery and nearby Black Rock Inn, also known as the Glass Mountain Inn, in St. Helena on Sunday night, The Sacramento Bee reported. Videos from the fire lines show the winery, founded in 1979, in flames.

The Rombauer Vineyards lie just across the Silverado Trail from Chateau Boswell, and Duckhorn Vineyards are a mile south, Wine Spectator reported.

Chateau Boswell is one of a handful of family-owned private wineries in the Napa Valley, according to its website. Founded to focus on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery now produces a diverse portfolio of wines from vineyards across California.

The fire also burned a farmhouse at Castello di Amorosa, a castle winery that is a popular Napa Valley tourist destination, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. The farmhouse contained bottled wine, some fermentation tanks and offices, said winery vice president Jim Sullivan.

Damage also has been reported at the Hourglass Winery and Tuck Beckstoffer Vineyards, Wine Spectator reported.

“The upper eastern Napa Valley got hammered,” said winemaker Anthony Biagi of Hourglass Winery, according to the publication. The winery survived but its vineyards were destroyed, Biagi said.
