Update: Fires still burning in SLO County after lightning storm

Update, 10:50 a.m.:

After lightning storms Saturday sparked three fires that continued to burn through Sunday, Cal Fire firefighters have had success in containing and stopping forward progress of the blazes as of Monday morning.

The 2-2 Fire was fully contained as of Sunday evening, according to Cal Fire. The fire reached grew to about 68 acres and was located just east of Nipomo near Rancho and South Dana Foodhill roads.

No structures were damaged and all Cal Fire personnel have been removed from the fire, according to Cal Fire.

The largest of the three blazes, the Whale Fire, has remained at 210 acres since Sunday morning, according to Cal Fire. As of Monday morning, the fire was 40% contained, with no structures threatened or damaged.

About 77 total personnel are fighting the Whale Fire, which is located east of Cayucos and Whale Rock Reservoir near Old Creek and Santa Rita roads, according to Cal Fire.

The 3-2 Fire is the smallest of the three, but grew from 13 acres Sunday to 20 acres by Monday morning, according to Cal Fire. Through Monday, crews will patrol the fire and look for remaining hot spots to put out, according to Cal Fire.

As of Monday, just one Cal Fire firefighter was fighting the 3-2 Fire, which is located east of Cayucos, south of Highway 46 near Sunrise Ridge and Santa Rita roads.

For both the Whale Fire and 3-2 Fire, crews have had to battle steep terrain and high temperatures.

Three small fires sparked by lightning storms on Saturday continued to burn through the night and into Sunday near Cayucos and Nipomo, according to Cal Fire.

The Whale Fire, located east of Cayucos and Whale Rock Reservoir near Old Creek and Santa Rita roads, is the largest of the three; it has burned 210 acres as of Sunday morning, according to Cal Fire.

Fire crews have had to battle steep terrain and high temperatures there, but they’ve stopped forward spread of the fire, Cal Fire said. Crews have the fire 35% contained, with no structures damaged or threatened.

A totla of 85 personnel were fighting the Whale Fire, according to Cal Fire.

The 2-2 Fire in Nipomo had reached about 68 acres as of Sunday morning, according to Cal Fire. The fire is located just east of Nipomo near Rancho and South Dana Foothill roads.

The fire was at 95% containment, and Cal Fire crews expected to have it fully contained on Sunday with four personnel fighting it.

The 3-2 Fire was the smallest of the three, at just 13 acres burned east of Cayucos, south of Highway 46 near Sunrise Ridge and Santa Rita roads.

Like the Whale Fire, crews faced steep terrain in battling the 3-2 Fire, according to Cal Fire. As of Sunday morning, the 3-2 Fire was 50% contained, with 53 personnel fighting it.
