California Valley fire 85% contained after burning 90 acres

A grass fire burned 90 acres in California Valley Thursday afternoon, but a quick response from firefighting aircraft prevented it from spreading widely.

Cal Fire SLO initially tweeted that the fire had a potential to grow to 1,000 acres.

At 5 p.m., however, the agency said it had stopped forward progress, and by 10 p.m., the fire was 85% contained and crews were mopping up hot spots.

The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. Thursday near the Belmont Trail and Bend Road, north of Soda Lake.

Cal Fire said a second fire sparked in the area near Highway 58 and 7 Mile Road, burning about a quarter acre and threatening a structure.

Firefighters are using both air and ground attacks to combat the two fires.

The Bureau of Land Management Fire Department helped with the response.
