Tesla is recalling nearly all Cybertrucks due to a defect. What CA owners need to know
Tesla is recalling thousands of vehicles due to a defective part that could endanger other drivers, including California motorists.
The car manufacturer taking more than 46,000 of its Cybertrucks off the road due to an exterior trim panel that can potentially detach from the vehicle, “increasing the risk of a crash,” CNBC reported.
The voluntary recall affects all Cybertrucks manufactured from November 2023 to February 2025, Tesla wrote in a March 18 filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
News of the recall comes amid a wave of controversy involving tech billionaire Elon Musk and his role in the Trump administration.
Critics of the de facto head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have sold their Tesla cars, vandalized vehicles and charging stations and staged protests across California.
Demonstrators were planning another protest at a Sacramento Tesla service center on Saturday, March 22.
Here’s what to know about the Cybertruck recall:
Which Tesla vehicles are being recalled?
According to Tesla’s federal filing, vehicles affected by the recall includes all Cybertruck vehicles with a 2024 or 2025 model year manufactured from Nov. 13, 2023, to Feb. 27, 2025.
Why is Tesla taking Cybertrucks off the road? What’s wrong?
Each Cybertruck has an applique known as a cant rail that’s attached to the outside of the vehicle, according to Tesla.
The stainless steel panel of the cant rail can “delaminate” and “separate from the vehicle,” the company said in its filing.
If this happens while the Cybertruck is in drive, “It could create a road hazard for following motorists and increase their risk of injury or a collision,” Tesla said.
“Tesla is not aware of any collisions, fatalities or injuries that are or may be related” to the malfunctioning part, the company said.
How can I tell if my vehicle has defective part?
Cybertruck owners may notice a noise inside the cabin or see the steel panel “coming loose or separating from the vehicle,” Tesla said.
What should I do if my truck was recalled?
Cybertruck owners can call Tesla customer service at 877-798-3752 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
